Rashida Jones to Star in TBS Comedy “Tribeca”

Outgoing Parks and Recreation star Rashida Jones has lined up her next small-screen venture.

The actress/producer has been tapped to star in TBS’ Steve Carell comedy pilot Tribeca, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Conceived by Steve Carell and his wife, Nancy, the couple will write and executive produce Tribeca, a single-camera satirical look at a police procedural anchored by Angie Tribeca (Jones), a 10-year veteran of the LAPD’s elite RHCU — Really Heinous Crimes Unit. The single-camera comedy explores an eccentric but brilliant group of people who investigate crime, reveal way too much personal information, and refuse to rest until justice has been served … sort of. These dedicated men and women are more than counter-intuitive; they are nonintuitive. Carell will direct the pilot, which hails from his Carousel Productions banner.

Jones’ Angie is further described as a lone wolf who is capable, committed, strong and not thrilled when she’s told she has to work with a partner. A cut-to-the-chase girl who speaks her mind, she treads where many fear to venture.

For Jones, the casting comes as she’s poised to exit NBC’s Parks and Recreation following the cult comedy’s 13th episode this season — currently scheduled for Jan. 30. Beyond acting, Jones — via her two-year overall deal with Celeste & Jesse Forever writing partner Will McCormack — has been a prolific producer this development season with six sales. So far, Jones and McCormack’s NBC comedy A to Z has moved further, landing a pilot order at the network.

“It’s been a slow build, and episode 13 is the gigantic, explosive farewell,” Parks and Recreation showrunner Mike Schur told THR of Jones and co-star Rob Lowe’s upcoming exit. “It will have been set up for almost half a year. We didn’t want to have an episode 12 like, ‘Hey, I got a job offer. Let’s leave Pawnee,’ and suddenly they disappear. We want to give them a properly dramatic and formal send-off.”

The decision to write Lowe and Jones out of Parks, Schur said, was deemed a natural evolution for the characters, who have been with the series since season two and one, respectively.

Jones, who next has British indie film Cuban Fury, is repped by UTA and Schreck Rose.
